District Overview

Introduction

The Marathwada region of Maharashtra is having eight districts namely Aurangabad, Beed, Hingoli, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Osmanabad and Parbhani. The Parbhani district earlier also known as “Prabhavati Nagar”. The Parbhani district is consists of 8 talukas namely Parbhani, Jintur, Selu, Manwat, Pathri, Gangakhed, Sonpeth and Purna.  

 

Geographical Location

Parbhani district lies between 18.450 and 20.010 North Latitudes and 76.130 and 77.390 East Longitude. The district is bounded on the north by Hingoli district, east by Nanded district, south by Beed and Latur districts  and on the West by Jalna district. The branch of Sahyadri mountain (Ajantha ranges) is passing through the northern site of Jintur taluka. Due to this range a platue has been formed in northern part of Jintur taluka whose attitude ranges from 1500 to 1600 M.S.L. (Mean Sea Level). Also on the south side of the district in Gangakhed tahasil small ranges of Balaghat mountains are spread.

Information about district.

The district head quarter is at Parbhani. For the convenience of administration, the district is divided in to two subdivisions namely Parbhani and Selu. The Parbhani subdivision is made up of Parbhani, Gangakhed, Palam, Sonpeth and purna these five talukas where as Selu subdivision is having Selu, Pathri, Manwath and Jintur these other four talukas.  Godavari is main river flows in the district from west to east direction. Most of the people in the district is dependent on farming. The district covers an area of about 6250.58 sq. k.m. The district is at an average height of 357 m from mean sea level.

Historical Background:

As Parbhani district is having 9 talukas and each have its special identity in the district. Parbhani is a holy place and it is a land of saints also the district have many historical places.

Gangakhed  

Janabai was erected at Gangakhed. Ranisawargaon is located 18 km from Gangakhed, where an ancient temple of lord  Renukamata was founded by lord Parshuram. A famous sweet named as “Kalam” is made at Gangakhed, which is made up of Khoa and Sugar.

Syed Shah Turabul Haque Dargah, Parbhani

Syed Shah turabul Haque was a great muslim saint of Parbhani district. He was a disciple of great Maharashtrian saint Shri Samarth Ramdas Swami. He translate a marathi scripture of Samarth Ramdas known as “Das Bodh” in urdu language. Since last 350 years the hindu and Muslims pilgrims came here at pilgrimage, which will be celebrated in the period of 31st January to 2nd February.

Tridhara

A Tridhara is located 12 km from Parbhani. It is called as Tridhara because a confluence of 3 rivers at that place.

Pokharni

A holy place Pokharni is situated on southern side, which is 19 km from Parbhani city  is located where a temple of lord Narsimha is present.

Pardeshwar temple

In Parbhani city, Mrityunjay Pardeshwar temple of Lord Shiva was established. The temple is one of the biggest temple in the country. In the temple a lump is made up of mercury of 250 kg.

Jintur

In Jintur taluka, 18 k.m. from Jintur, a historical place charthana is located. It is famous because of number of temples constructed of Lord Shiva. A hanging piller which  exist in the village attract the tourist. Also near to jintur, 7 caves  on the mountain are present of Jain religion. It is famous by the name Nemgiri.

Marathwada Agriculture University:

As Parbhani is centrally located in Marathwada, for the development of agriculture, the government has decided to establish agriculture university at Parbhani for Marathwada region. So on 18th May 1972 , Marathwada Agriculture University was established at Parbhani. By considering the basic need in agriculture, university had started education in agriculture, Food Technology, Agriculture engineering, Home Science, horticulture and offers graduate, Post graduate and Ph. D. courses. The university also established its colleges at Latur, Ambajogai in Beed district, Osmanabad, Badnapur. 

Rivers :

Godavari is only main river in the district. Dudhana and Purna are other sub-rivers of Godavari. The length of the river is 79 km in the district and flows from west to east through Pathri, Gangakhed and Palam talukas and enters in to Nanded district. A sub river of Godavari, Dudhana flows in Selu, Jintur, Parbhani and Purna talukas and enters to Hingoli district. A Yeldari dam is constructed on Purna river at Jintur taluka of the district.

Weather:  

The rainy season starts from June and prolongs up to September. The minimum and maximum temperatures recorded are 100c and 460c respectively.

Soil type:

Basically the soil of the district is black and its fertility and deepness is different at different location in the district.

The most of the soil in Parbhani district is black cotton soil.

  1. The soil near by Godavari river is deep and fertile.

  2. Middle part of district viz. Selu, Pathri, Parbhani and Purna talukas and some of the part of Jintur taluka have medium and black soils.

  3. Gangakhed and Palam Talukas have light soils.

Industries:

According to Indian act 1948, in 2003, 84 industries are close out of 245 registered industries in the district. Only 161 industries are working and having 5868 workers.
